Last week on Saturday, teachers from 15 schools in the Philadelphia region gathered for a first-time Dream Flag teacher workshop.  It was held at Belmont Hills Elementary School in Bala Cynwyd, PA and hosted by Lower Merion School District. From 9 to about 11:30 teachers from schools in central Philadelphia, south Philadelphia, the western suburbs, and the northern suburbs sat together to hear about how the project works in schools and what we can learn from each other’s experiences. There was  great mix of new and returning schools. Some had been doing it for five years; others were trying it for the first time this year.

Jeff and Sandy gave an overview of the project and the resources found on the web.  Then teachers did the hands-on segment of making their own Dream Flags. Even teachers who had done the project many times with students could feel the excitement (and anxiety?) of creating their own dream poem, putting it on fabric, and bringing it to life with color.

Mary Pat presented on the ways she worked to support t teachers so that The Dream Flag Project moved from a few classrooms in Belmont Hills to the entire Lower Merion District. Last year, more than thousands of students participated in her district and connected nearly all of their Dream Flags at the Kimmel Center regional celebration.
