Themes
of collaboration and connection seemed to
weave through the three hours educators
spent together last on Saturday, February
7th at
The Philadelphia School in the heart of
Center City Philadelphia. New teachers from
Independence Charter School and other joined
veterans of The Dream Flag Project from
schools such as Chestnut Hill Academy. The
group also included educators from
non-school organizations such as the
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia art
therapy department and the Children's
International Summer Village organization.
In
addition to basic background on the project
from Jeff and Sandy, teachers heard about
approaches to poetry from Miriam Harlan of
The Philadelphia School, and saw many
examples of art forms from the dozens of
flags hung around the room. In a discussion
of how to collaborate with other Dream Flag
schools, Eve Horowitz presented information
about her work with The Jungle School in
Honduras, and in a discussion of how to
involve your whole school community, Dream
Flag veteran Mary Pat McFarland shared
resources to make it easy and tips to keep
in focused.
For
many, creating our own Dream Flags was
especially important as we, among fellow
Dream Flag teachers, could share our own
dreams for our students, ourselves, and the
world.
