It’s our 5th anniversary this year, and someone has suggested an activity we thought was great. We’re calling it Pass The Banner--a hands-on way to connect your school to others.

Last year we did a related banner project. Sixteen schools collaborated to create a flag line that said, “T-H-E D-R-E-A-M F-L-A-G P-R-O-J-E-C-T.” Each letter reflected the school that made it. Some had pictures of the place; others had decorations that reflected the specific school and region. It was a wonderful sort of tapestry in a banner.

Would you like to try this?

Here’s the “skinny” on Pass The Banner:

What it is: A collaborative Dream Flag banner created by your school and four others. You help build it, then display it in your school for a week. (It is an optional addition to what you normally do for The Dream Flag Project. You do not need to have completed your own Dream Flags to participate in Pass The Banner.)

Materials/Resources:
Two 8 ½ x 11 inch pieces of cloth and materials to decorate them.

What you need to do:
Make two letter flags. (The flags can be decorated in any way you wish. Students could all sign the flag. It could reflect special things about your region or school, etc.)

When you receive the flag line, attach your two flags to it.

Mail the flag line to the next school on the list.

Then what?

The completed banner gets mailed to you.

Display it for a week, then mail it on.

Time Frame:
By Friday, January 18,
RSVP (reply to this email)
(We need the replies by then to make the timing work.)
Week of January 21st: You find out about your five-school group.
Week of January 27th: First school gets the rope to attach flags. The process begins.
March through April. Displays in your five schools.
April 8:  Banners get mailed to to Philadelphia for the April 19 Dream Flag Celebration. Photos and videos of all will be posted on the web site.

Please let us know by next Friday if you’re interested. We hope everyone will get “roped in” because it’s so much fun and such a great way to make the connections real for our students.

Yours dreaming,

--Jeff and Sandy

P.S. This letter is going to all schools who might be participating this year since we wanted people who haven’t registered yet to know about it and be able to participate. If you’re planning to participate this year and haven’t told us yet, we’d love to hear from you about it.
