Hello, New Dream Flag Teachers!
This week marks the “official” start of the 2008 Dream Flag Project, as Friday, February 1, is the 106th birthday of Langston Hughes! We’re so glad you’re joining in this year.
Participating is simple:
Create poems and Dream Flags in
an 8 1/2 x 11 in. size, connect them to a line, and complete them by April
(National Poetry Month) so we can all share the work.
Have your students
create dream poems
Have each student put
a dream poem on an 8 ½” x 11” piece of fabric.
Connect all the Dream
Flags to a line.
Complete this by April (National Poetry Month)
so we can all share the work.
As for the particulars, we have many suggestions, but remember that it’s your project, and you should do it the way that works best for you.
Getting Started
At our school, we’re celebrating the birthday of Langston Hughes. Our “Gift of Words” assignment for creating a performance birthday present is included in the web page for Ideas for the First Week. That page also has background on Hughes, lesson plans, and more. Check it out.
Updates
Between now and April--if you are a participating teacher--you’ll get several emails from us with essential project information. In addition, we’ll put posts under “What’s New” on the homepage of our web site--www.dreamflags.org –usually on Monday mornings.
About You
One of our goals in The Dream Flag Project is to help students see themselves as part of a larger community—The Dream Flag Project community which is in so many places and includes so many ages. We’d like to help our students learn about your school or group, and we hope you’d like to learn about us too.
One of our teachers has set up a Wiki site where we can all post information about our schools. You can create a page for your school there and upload any pictures, thoughts, poems, etc. that you like.
The address is: http://dreamflags.pbwiki.com
The password to make entries is: dream
Please don’t ever hesitate to email us with your individual questions or comments. You can email either of us at our shared address, dreamflags@agnesirwin.org. It’s not an imposition for us, and we love being in touch with you about what’s going on in your school!
Thank your willingness to try out The Dream Flag Project--and for your dedication to giving student dreams an important place in our communities and a powerful connection to one another.
Yours dreaming,
--Jeff and Sandy
